Goal:
For this project, we were to design a representation of an animal, utilizing point line and shape to communicate specific characteristics and attributes it possesses. After creating and finalizing the creature mark, we wrote an interpretive phrase further communicating these features. Using the Fibonacci sequence as a guideline, we placed the creature mark and typography within a rectangular frame.
Reference
Initial Exploration
Using the reference material as a basis, the form language was constructed from circles and basic shapes. There were a few important characteristics to be displayed:
1. Three-section carapace
2. Bat-like wings
3. Strange head shape
4. Spindly legs
5. Sharp claws/pincers.
Some associative characteristics to convey are:
1. Aggressive
2. Shielded
3. Alien
4. Predator
5. Fierce
Form Language Exploration
After reaching a place where I felt confident with the overall shape and design of the creature mark, I began experimenting and iterating on the form language of the piece. How could small elements be changed to create texture and more accurately represent the animal's characteristics?
Final Creature Mark
Interpretive Phrase
After completing the creature mark, the second portion of this project was to write an interpretive phrase based on the creature, providing some written context which would tell a viewer something about the animal. We then laid out the creature mark, graphic elements and typography on a rectangular image area, utilizing a grid structure based on the golden ratio.
